Dover Castle - St Mary in Castro Church
c1960s
The Norman Church
has stood in the grounds of Dover Castle for many centuries alongside the
tallest standing Roman structure in Britain, the Lighthouse or Pharos.
Along with it's twin on the Western Heights, it guided the Roman fleet into the
harbour in the town below.
For many years until the 1870's the church stood derelict and was used as a coal bunker for the military garrison. It was only then that it was restored back to it's former glory along with a lot of new Victorian decoration.
