Guided Walks

In conjunction with the White Cliffs Countryside Project and as members of the Western Heights Preservation Society we shall be carrying out a series of guided walks around Dover over the coming year.  Details as below:

 

Sunday 21st October 2.00pm
DOVER’S HIDDEN FORTRESS (Please book)
A brisk stroll around the hidden Napoleonic defences of the Western Heights - see the Grand Shaft, the site of the barracks and get the
opportunity for a brief look at the town from within the Drop Redoubt. Please wear sensible footwear. Numbers are limited so please e-
mail walks@doverpast.co.uk to book your place. All places are pre-book only. CHARGE: £3 adults, accompanied children free.

Sunday 22nd June 2.00pm  DOVER TOWN WALK £2

With the upcoming changes to the St James’s area of Dover see some of the buildings that were situated in this former main route into Dover.  We will then cross to the seafront and hear about the Dover Promenade Pier.  We’ll hear a voice from 1906, and see the Seaplane Station along with many other long-forgotten landmarks.

DISTANCE: 1.5 miles (2 hour).

GRADE: 1 (suitable for wheelchairs)

 

 

Sunday 13th July 1.00pm  WESTERN HEIGHTS LONG TRAIL £3

An anti-clockwise walk taking in 90% of the fortifications on the Western Heights.  See the Drop Redoubt, the North centre Detached Bastion, the Citadel, Citadel Battery, the site of South Front Battery, Victoria Hall and the site of the Garrison Chapel.  Profusley illustrated with images of long-demolished buildings.

DISTANCE: 4 miles (4 hours).

GRADE: 3 (steep steps and slopes, rough terrain)

By kind permission of Dover Harbour Board, we are planning a walk around the former thriving Pier District (now the Western Docks).  See the former Harbour Station and Strond Street in days-gone-by.  Pass the grandiose  Lord Warden Hotel and the hidden WW1 memorial in the Cruise Terminal
